Want to hear Back Pocket Tracks?

One of the things I miss the most in the situation I'm currently in is not having anyone to share music with. I love getting together with people to listen to music and I love talking about music even more. For me, the only thing more thrilling than exposing someone to new music is being exposed to new music. So to kick off this new endeavor I'm going to share a CD that I made to keep Lisa company down in Nashville. If the track list (see below) looks interesting to you, shoot me an e-mail with your mailing address and I'll send one your way. My only request is that you contribute some comments on the tracks or at least add general comments. Here's to a new adventure.

email sent. But I thought I'd leave you a comment as well. The comp looks very interesting and very "not what I normally listen to", which is great. Can't wait to hear it.

I committed that I would NOT be the first person to post here (that's too wifey-difey for me), and now that "the other Les" posted first, I can post!

I have the premier copy of this CD in the "special edition actual painted back pocket from Les's old jeans" format. Most of you probably know that Les's taste in music is very different than mine, so getting compilation CDs from him poses some relationship problems. What if I hate every song on the CD? Can I tell him that? Would that really piss him off? Is it okay that I just listen to the first 45 seconds and then skip forward to the next song? Is saying, "Hey, I like it!" enough, or should I be more detailed?

Les and I have been married for nine years and have been together for 12 years total. I may not always understand him or know the right thing to do or say to make him happy, but I do have it sorted out a little. So, let me offer you some advice and guidance as in regards to receiving a CD from Les:

1) Know that he lovingly chooses each song. This is no slap-dash effort, randomly pulling CDs off a shelf, blindly pointing to a track, and slapping it on a CD. I usually never see Les happier than when he is creating a mix CD.

The fact that this CD was created for me (Miss Ego, here) means that the songs were even more carefully chosen. This will work to your benefit because this CD has been created with my tastes (mainstream) in mind, meaning that the tracks are weird, but not too weird, pushing my boundaries just enough. For every out-there song, he has included at least two somewhat normal songs, making it a very accessible CD.

2) Les really, really loves feedback. The more detailed, the better. I actually take notes while listening to the tracks and share that feedback with him afterwards. You get bonus points for "trainspotting," if you can manage that: "I believe this song was greatly inspired by Tenor Saw's 'Ring the Alarm' vocals." Or pointing out interesting things about the song: "The guitar in the second verse sounded like someone singing 'baby, baby, baby.' Did you notice that?" But as long as you say something, anything, you're golden. When he sends out CDs and people don't say anything about the music, he's actually a little broken-hearted.

3) Sending a mix CD is Les's way of creating a connection with YOU. He loves to talk about music with people he loves. If you become a person he can talk about music with, you are forever on his A list of friends. He's pretty open-minded about music and likes a lot of different things and feels like he can talk to nearly anyone about the music that they like. If you are open to what he likes (or what he thinks you will like), he sees it as a two-way street of musical interaction and is really happy to be your friend.

Don't be intimidated about what to say. He is really happy to get any comments posted here. But just don't say nothing. That's really bad in the Book of Les.

And, no, Les didn't even pay me to tell you all of this. I just know from experience.

Happy listening.

Oops…I guess I’m too hubby-dubby…I was first to leave comments on your blog.

You damn well better not be listening to only the first 45 seconds of these tracks that I so painstakingly selected for you with great love, care, and devotion.

Oooh…Ring the Alarm is a great song…you get points just for mentioning it!

Gosh, I sure sound demanding…it’s a burden to hang with me eh? Oh well, what doesn’t kill you makes me stronger…wait. Did I get that right?
